Award winning development which transformed the former River Yealm Hotel into luxurious apartments.
The River Yealm Hotel was in its hey-day a prestigious hotel in a spectacular riverfront location. The building had since ceased to operate as a hotel and was at risk of vandalism, having been vacant for several years. Grainge Architects undertook an extensive revitalisation of the site, comprising the conversion of the historic hotel into high-quality, apartments and development of contemporary new-build apartment blocks and a single dwelling unit within the grounds.
The new elements are modest in scale and remain subservient to the original building yet provide visual stimulation and contrast across the site. By departing from traditional pitched roof forms, it was possible to create a low profile for the new developments to minimise their impact on the wider public views across the estuary.
“Grainge Architects designed a scheme which has uncovered our site’s full potential and enhanced the intrinsic elements that make it so special. The resulting dwellings are stunning. The hotel has been sensitively transformed into expansive apartments and the new-build homes nestle into the surrounding woodland with curved, articulated forms that make the most of the wonderful views over the estuary. As befits a luxury development, the attention to detail was excellent and we are particularly pleased to have achieved a high level of energy efficiency and acoustic separation.”
