Balancing tradition and modernity in Dartmoor National Park. The Scheme thoughtfully blends contemporary homes with South Brent’s vernacular style, offering sustainability and affordable housing important to the local community.
New housing within the Dartmoor National Park. The development provides contemporary homes while reflecting the identity of South Brent by strong references to the vernacular style (such as clipped eaves, chimneys), materials (painted render, natural stone and slate-hanging, slated roofs), scale and massing of the village.
This site was allocated for housing within the Dartmoor Development Management and Delivery Development Plan Document, in which context a development brief was prepared with Cavanna Homes. Preparation of this brief included extensive consultation with the local community, involving creation of a stakeholder group, workshop events, public exhibitions and meetings with statutory consultees. This process ensured that the resulting masterplan met the requirements of the local community, with emphasis placed on sustainability and the provision of a suitable level of affordable housing. A broad mix of housing was included, and each dwelling was sensitively designed to reflect the character of the village and sit comfortably within its rural setting.
