Plymouth University’s landmark Performing Arts Centre in the heart of the city.
“The House” is a landmark building and high-specification contemporary arts centre for Plymouth University. It houses a 200-capacity sprung-floor theatre as well as studio space and office accommodation with front- and back-of-house provision. The scheme was developed in conjunction with Midas Construction, from an original concept design by another specialist performing-arts architect.
Accessibility is a strong theme. A ‘high-tension wire grid’ – one of a few in the UK -provides wheel-chair access for students with disabilities to develop technical theatre expertise in lighting, sound and scenography.
The building incorporates a wide range of sustainable initiatives, including natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and light detection sensors, and achieves a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
