A “Centre of Health” for Okehampton and the wider community.
This community hospital provides general medical and confused-elderly wards, casualty, maternity, outpatients, mortuary and admin areas. On a sloping site, the principal elements are innovatively arrayed to follow site contours, maximising use of natural ventilation and daylight and substantially reducing the cost of mechanical servicing usual to hospital buildings.
The planning created opportunities for a series of intimate ‘garden’ spaces which contribute to the fulfilment of the original brief for a “Centre for Health” rather than illness.
