Innovative new mental healthcare facility providing specialist care for adults with a learning disability and /or autism.
This project has been carefully designed to provide a therapeutic environment for people with complex sensory needs and has a strong focus on connections with the outdoors to support patient well-being.
10 individual patient flats are provided, each containing a living / dining space, bedroom, ensuite and private garden. Alongside the flats are communal day spaces, treatment and therapy rooms, visitor facilities and staff spaces, all arranged in ‘fingers’ around a series of generous gardens / courtyards. The gardens offer a variety of recreational opportunities and sensory experiences to suit a range of patient needs.
The building’s gentle, almost domestic appearance is intended to feel approachable and familiar to patients, their visitors and carers. Care has been taken to use simple forms and warm materials that give the building a human scale and avoid the look of a traditional ‘institution’.
