Giving new life to a listed wool-drying house in Exeter’s historic quayside.
The existing 15C wool-drying shed was one of a small number of surviving buildings in this quayside development area, which while Grade II listed was in an extreme state of disrepair. Conversion work to provide the community / training elements of Exeter Foyer involved virtual rebuild, preserving important structural elements.
Design and construction were carried out in detailed consultation with the local authority Conservation Officer and Archaeologist. The design details included innovative methods for allowing the existing structural elements to continue performing a genuine role – not simply be retained as cosmetic facing to modern structural intervention.
