Planning permission was granted yesterday for Holsworthy’s new Livestock Market designed by Grainge Architects. This new 34 acre greenfield development on the outskirts of Holsworthy involved extensive collaboration with Torridge District Council, the local community, numerous stakeholders & Kivell’s the livestock market operators.
The scheme comprises of a large livestock building with associated show rings, vehicle and service areas and a cloistered courtyard containing cafe, offices and chattels buildings.
The market courtyard, attenuation ponds and animal lairage are visible at the front of the building, whereas the majority of vehicle and service areas are positioned on the north facing rear of the building.
Balancing DEFRA’s specific animal welfare requirements with that of the livestock market operator’s whilst creating a highly sustainable building provided our practice with a unique set of challenges.
Following the completion of the buildings detailed design, construction will start later this year. We will post further articles as the livestock market takes shape.
