What a fabulous day to have a site visit to your dream new home on the banks of the River Exe. Over the last few months passers-by in Lympstone could not fail to notice this striking new house designed by Grainge Architects being constructed. The building has a glorious southerly aspect looking out across the Exe Estuary toward Powderham Castle & the Haldon Hills. The development site adjoins the Lympstone Conservation Area & necessitated delicate negotiations with East Devon District Council. Designing this building to be sensitive to its unique location whilst ensuring the most was made of this rare opportunity provided our practice with a considerable challenge.
The design concept successfully balances open plan spatial requirements with an aesthetic that is not overtly modernist. Key elements of the design include a southerly aspect for all the principle living spaces, a thermally massive structure, insulation in excess of current building regulation requirements and high performance solar control glazing.
