Washmoor Barn

Devon, UK.

This conversion of an old cob and flint-walled barn inverted the accommodation to allow the beautiful internal building form to be enjoyed within the living spaces at first floor level. Setting smaller scale rooms - bedrooms etc - below provided a 'cellular' base structure which, by using a thick timber flooring deck as a structural diaphragm, stabilised the ageing walls allowing more to be retained.

Replacement of existing dilapidated roof trusses, following the original pattern and using pitch pine but using modern connection methods, enabled these to support the new thatched roof without further structural intervention.

Cob walls were finished both externally and internally with lime render/plaster, allowing the building to breathe.
