The Yealm Hotel

Newton Ferrers, Devon, UK.

The River Yealm Hotel was in its hey-day a prestigious hotel in a spectacular riverfront location. The building had since ceased to operate as a hotel and was at risk of vandalism, having been vacant for several years. Grainge Architects undertook an extensive revitalisation of the site, comprising the conversion of the historic hotel into high-quality, apartments and development of contemporary new-build apartment blocks and a single dwelling unit within the grounds.

Given the site’s historic significance and prominent position within the wider setting (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the design was developed in close consultation with the local planning authority. The new-build elements were designed in an overtly contemporary style to enhance the presence of the historic building in the landscape by creating a clear distinction between the new architecture and traditional aesthetic of the existing building.

The new elements are modest in scale and remain subservient to the original building, yet provide visual stimulation and contrast across the site. By departing from traditional pitched roof forms, it was possible to create a low profile for the new developments to minimise their impact on the wider public views across the estuary.
