St Aidan's Church

Plymouth, Devon, UK.

This new church was built on the site of an earlier Victorian church which was too large and un-manageable for current needs, and was provided through an enlightened deal with a developer: the new church provided at no cost, the developer using the remainder of the site for housing.  This principle was used as a model for other similar arrangements across the country.

The new building provides highly flexible space, with 'disappearing' space dividers, catering for traditional worship but also for wider community uses.  Some features from the earlier church were incorporated into the new building - notably the stained glass window.
