The King's School - Catering Classroom

Posted on November 30, 2021

One of our latest projects to be completed on site is the new catering classroom for The King’s School in Ottery St. Mary. The King’s School is an 11-18 comprehensive school with approximately 1110 students. The project set out to replace the temporary portacabin (which had been on the site for 16 years) with a high functioning catering classroom. This will provide an important facility to support the curriculum and improve outcomes for the pupils.

Although the design was entirely led by the practicality of the plans, careful consideration was given to the natural light and natural ventilation strategies. The high-level windows and the skillion & lean to roof ensures that the classroom is filled with indirect natural light, whilst minimising the requirement for mechanical ventilation. Given the nature of the building and the site it is situated within, robust and low maintenance materials were selected to further extend the new buildings lifespan and reduce future costs for the School.

The project was delivered during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, so remote working, online design review meetings and socially distant site visits were implemented. Despite these challenges, we believe this project has been a success, thanks to the flexibility and communication between the Client Team and the Design team.

The School are currently making use of their new classroom as they are moving towards examination periods and we wish all of the students the very best of luck.
