Over the last two decades or more our practice has undertaken numerous Ecclesiastical Projects. During this time we have worked for many differing denominations providing all manner of architectural services on both new build & refurbishment schemes. These projects almost always involved developing the project brief with input from the clergy or ministers, buildings team & wider congregation.
Grainge Architects have successfully worked with the Catholic Church, Church of England & several Evangelical Groups across the South West. We are experienced in both liaising with the Historic Churches Commission and Historic England, our practice has close ties with specialist Heritage Consultants who can be consulted as necessary.
Where our projects have required specific input from acousticians, lighting designers, stonemasons, and other specialist craftsman we have developed excellent working relationships with many specialist companies to ensure the highest standards are achieved for our clients.
We have also successfully worked on a number of projects where it has been necessary to unpick poorly conceived earlier extensions and ill considered interior designs to bring the historic building back to their former glory. Our scheme for the Diocese of Plymouth to completely reorder the church of Our Lady & Saint Patrick in Teignmouth was very successful and really demonstrates our practices attention to detail.
We have also designed several completely new churches including two in Plymouth where the buildings had to be as flexible as possible. The requirement for the church to be able to hold both large congregations or separate smaller groups lead us to develop a discrete sliding wall system splitting the main church into two acoustically separate zones.
Projects in Torquay & Sherborne both involved creating new entrances to the existing churches which served as lobby areas to both conserve the heat in the main church & also an opportunity to meet both at the beginning and end of services away from the weather.
