Sports

‘Sports’ is a broad title and embraces several sectors of architectural activity -  education, recreation (both action and relaxation), commerce - and our projects reflect this. (See also our sections on Schools, Higher Education, Commercial.) Within the education sector we have designed multi-function sports centres, tennis courts, MUGAs, changing facilities and pavilions, boat houses.  Leisure and recreation projects include a cycle-hire hub, community-based sports/showground, a cycle bridge forming part of a new Sustrans route, swimming pools.  Commerce includes specialist retail outlet[s?] for sport and outdoor equipment, bowling.

Understanding of funding sources – eg Sport England – can help in unlocking related projects. An example: a new multi-agency community centre project (ref Victoria Community Centre, in our Community section) was able to obtain a significant contribution of Sport England funding by a fairly simple modification to the community hall element to allow its use for recognized sports activities.  Knowledge and understanding of standards set by such bodies as Sport England and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) inform our sports projects.

Appearance is probably low on most participants’ list of priorities but remains part of our responsibility to ensure a cohesive and congenial built environment. Sports related buildings require a balancing of robustness, economy, with satisfying architecture, which our projects demonstrate.
