Higher Education

With the demise of major governmental funding of higher education capital projects funding has become more commercially driven.  Colleges and Universities operate within a competitive market-place, and this is reflected in the nature of their buildings and what is required of them.  Hence flexibility, the ability to attract students and a variety of paying users, economy in construction and operation, all must be factored into the design of any new buildings – while maintaining the essentials of educational function, aspiration and inspiration. Similarly, understanding of the parameters which will attract what funding is available – eg through European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) – can be important.

Our higher-education projects include buildings for direct teaching, sports, performing arts, building trades, motor trades, science laboratories, catering, residential, social, and others.  (See featured buildings also in our Sports and Community sections.)

As with schools (see our Schools section), higher education projects are procured in a variety of ways, and we successfully work within these – whether as lead concept architect at master-planning and feasibility, or design stage, or as development architects within a design-and-build team.  In whatever capacity, our experience and understanding of both statutory and individual client requirements helps the success of the project.
