Highcliffe, Lympstone

This new house at Highcliff, Lympstone enjoys spectacular southerly views across the Exe Estuary toward Powderham Castle and the Haldon Hills. The site adjoins both the estuary and the Lympstone Conservation Area, and required sensitive design and negotiations with the local community and planning authority, in order both to respect its surroundings and make the most of its unique location.

The design concept successfully balances open plan spatial requirements with an aesthetic that is contemporary but not overtly modernist. Key elements of the design include a southerly aspect for all the principal living spaces, a thermally massive structure, insulation in excess of current building regulation requirements and high performance solar control glazing.
