Extension, Matford Avenue, Exeter

This imaginative extension responds to the requirements of the client's brief - for a very light, modern extension to the existing 1930s family home, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside space.

The design uses a combination of traditional and modern materials together with scale and pitching of roofs which manage both to relate it to the original building (the central valley, set between facing clerestory windows, channels a direct view from the existing staircase window to the Cathedral) and to create an exciting contrast.

A secondary 'little sister' extension to the end of the existing side wing of the house provides a covered hot-tub area, which further develops the blending of inside/outside space.
