Community Hospital, Okehampton

This new community hospital provides facilities including general admin areas, confused elderly ward, general medical wards, casualty, maternity, outpatients and mortuary.

Built on a sloping site, the principal elements were arrayed on a single level in an innovative form to follow the site contours, with mortuary services set at a lower ground floor level.  This also allowed maximum usage of natural ventilation and daylight, substantially reducing the cost of mechanical servicing generally associated with this building type.

The planning created opportunities for a series of intimate 'garden' spaces which contribute to the fulfillment of the original brief for a "centre for health" rather than illness - a place where patients 'feel better already' simply by visiting the building.
