St Nicholas School, Exeter
Built in tandem with Pinhoe School (separately featured) this Roman Catholic primary school was built in a new location some 3 miles away from the existing school.
Its sharing of project management and building contractor with Pinhoe CoE School allowed economies of scale which benefited both schools, but also led to many similarities in construction and style. These however belie the individuality of the two schools. Each involved in-depth briefing with teachers, parents, local residents and governors leading to specifically tailored solutions for each.
The Early Years provision is integrated with a pre-school nursery, separately accessed and with dedicated and outside play areas. It was built to high environmental standards, including such features as thermally massive internal construction, wind-catchers and sun-pipes, extensive green roof, and local materials. The design features solar shading and linkages from classrooms to individual outside teaching spaces.
