Ilfracombe Harbour

Grainge Architects have been engaged in several public realm improvements for Ilfracombe in and around the harbour area, on behalf of North Devon District Council. These have included street improvements, a scheme for a water-sports centre, and latterly a number of projects in the Harbour area, including a new harbour-master’s office building, and new storage compound and building for the local fishermen.

The new harbour-master’s office / restaurant building is designed as a contemporary building within the Conservation Area.  It will provide offices for the harbour-master and the Lundy Company as well as a high-quality café / restaurant, celebrating the adjacent Damian Hirst “Verity” sculpture and addressing the important prominent St Nicholas Chapel.

The water-sports centre provides indoor boat storage for gigs, equipment etc as well as outside laying up for dinghies and safety boats, showers etc, with club facilities at upper floor level.

These works are intended to work together as part of a joined up master plan to encourage regeneration of the waterfront area and create a vibrant quayside environment.
