Clyst Cycle Bridge

Grainge Architects were instrumental in the inception of this new cycle & pedestrian bridge over the River Clyst in Topsham, working with the nearby Darts Farm shopping outlet and the adjacent Bridge Inn at Topsham to investigate the feasibility of a new car-free bridge alongside the narrow and busy existing stone road bridge, which now forms part of a new Exe Estuary Trail between Exmouth and Exeter. Our initial design established the essential layout and design concept.

The design was developed and the bridge built by Devon County Council working with Sustrans. The bridge was designed in timber to be in keeping with its setting alongside a heritage structure and adjacent bird reserve and wetland habitat. It has a shared surface to cater for both cycles and pedestrians.

In addition to making the Exe Estuary Trail safer for leisure use, the new bridge also provides easier access for everyday journeys to workplaces, schools and local shops. The success of the scheme is apparent by the number of people that now use this route.
