St Agnes Workspace Units, Cornwall

An existing small community hall has been incorporated into this enlarged new centre which includes start-up work-spaces, office areas, community hall and exhibition area. Internally, openable screens maximize flexibility of use and provide well lit open and welcoming spaces.

The project was funded by a mix of community funds, Local Action Group Funding (RDPE) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) convergence fund, providing much-needed facilities for the community on the small island of St Agnes.

The build included conservation work to the existing historic hall and timber-framed construction for the new elements.  The location, 25 miles off the Cornish coast, strongly affects the choice of construction as virtually all materials have to be shipped to the island.  The design applies principles of Passivhaus and BREEAM to ensure a sustainable final build in keeping with the islands ethos of self sufficiency and low impact architecture.
